The squeezy pouches owe their long shelf life to a pasteurization process - the fresh fruit and veg puree is heated up.
The good thing is that we need absolutely no preservatives to keep the puree fresh and yummy for over a year. Keep in mind that once the seal of the squeezy pouch has been broken, the product should be consumed within one day.
Have fun trying all of our different flavours!
Squeezy Pouches with yoghurt flavour
Our squeezy pouches with yoghurt are pasteurized exactly the same way as our pure fruit and veg pouches. All ingredients are blended and heated, to ensure a long shelf life. This is pretty handy, since even with added yoghurt, the squeezy pouches do not need refrigeration. Yoghurt in a squeezy pouch is awesome, you can eater yoghurty fruit puree and you do not even need a spoon.
Fruit and veg crisps
The process to make these is a little bit different than for conventionally dried produce. The fruit and vegetables undergo a freeze drying process, where they not only retain their nutrients, but also their original taste and color. This is a method used for space food! We thought it was so cool, that we decided this needs to be available for little earthlings, without having to be in outer space.
It works like this: the moisture of the fruit and vegetables is extracted in a vacuum (sounds like space right?). The produce is frozen, and using temperature regulation, the frozen moisture is transformed directly into steam - which is extracted. That is how our fruit and veg crisps get so crunchy.
After saying goodbye to moisture, our dried fruit and vegetable crisps are stored in resealable bags, and perfectly convenient for on-the-go.
Our crunchy snacks are puffed and not fried in oil, which is called extrusion. After extruding, our snacks are covered in tasty fruit and veg powder to make them extra fruity. Mhhhhmmm.
The same thing goes for crunchy slices with banana and pumpkin powder. That is why the crunchy slices are easier for the little ones to eat.
Our tasty biscuits are baked wholemeal spelt flour punched into funny Freche Freunde shapes. This is also how our Mini-Pretzels with chickpeas are made, but they are dipped in pretzel lye first.
Freche Freunde cereal bars consist of 50% grain, mixed with dried fruit and processed to a mash. The mash is pressed and covered with wafers on the top and bottom. Finally, they are cut into single cereal bars.
Freche Freunde cereals are made by extrusion, just like our crunchy snacks. But they have a little extra magic. The puffed grain is covered in apple juice concentrate and sprinkled with fruit or vanilla powder. For our “Banana, Apple & Blueberry” and “Banana & Strawberry” breakfast cereals, we mix oat flakes with puffed grains and diced dried fruit, into a delicious breakfast for a good start to the day.
Our delicious vegetable noodles is a mixture of 25% vegetable puree and noodle dough - we are masters of sneaking in vegetables where you will least expect them. The dough is pressed through a mould and cut. Afterwards the noodles are dried for one or two days.
Flavourful raisins meet other dried fruit to create a delicious dried fruit mix. This snack is not only special in taste, but is perfectly rationed for kids. The little boxes are cute and a good snack size for in between meals.
With our snacks we have no intention at all to replace fresh fruit and vegetables. Our snacks are a great alternative when you are on-the-go.
The packaging of our products is very flexible which allows us to reduce our transport volume. The material is also super light and thin, meaning there is less weight to lug around, than is the case for other material like glass. As a comparison, one truck of empty squeezy pouches is equivalent to 15 trucks of baby puree glasses. Unlike conventional snacks, we also make sure that we only use the packaging that is needed to keep our products fresh, delicious and convenient for on the go. All of this helps us to reduce our carbon footprint.
Since 2017, our fruit and vegetable puree is packed in squeezy pouches made of over 80% renewable resources. The packaging is based on ethanol, made of a sugarcane derivative. This is great because sugar cane captures extra CO2 and converts this into Oxygen, and we can forego packaging made of fossil fuels, which we know are finite. For more information see “Green Packaging”.
So far so good, but what happens with the packaging after gobbling up our delicious squeezy pouches, and crunchy fruit and vegetable crisps? We were able to launch a recycling program in Germany which gives our packaging a second life. Pretty cool, right?
We do know, that our solution is not the “greenest” yet. Nevertheless, we believe in the importance of avoiding finite resources for packaging and think that using renewable resources is an important first step in the right direction to sustainable packaging. We are constantly doing further research and working on innovation packaging to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.
By the way, since green packaging has the same characteristics as conventional composite materials there are no compromises regarding the quality of the packaging and it can be recycled to 100%.
They understand that parents want to do their best for their little ones, especially when it comes to food. Yet there wasn’t much on the market for those difficult days, when busy family life left little time for washing and chopping fruit and veg. Not to mention the times when youngsters pull a face at the sight of something healthy. It can be tough! That’s why Natacha and Alex launched Freche Freunde in 2010. And they’ve been bursting with ideas for innovative, healthy snacks ever since. So kids can now playfully make friends with different fruit and veg, which also makes their parents’ lives easier. Natacha and Alex’s children Dylan, Amélie & Maya are their biggest source of inspiration.
